Crowning Glory is a new play opening this month on October 17th
at the Theatre Royal Stratford East.
As you probably guessed, it's about Black women and their hair, and I can't wait to go and see it.
Check out the Press Release:"Theatre Royal Stratford East presents Crowning Glory, a new play by Somalia Seaton that seeks to reveal a hidden world of unobtainable beauty by asking the question, how do women truly see themselves in today’s world?
Featuring an all-female cast, this funny, raw and thought-provoking show is set to provide a fresh take on the long-standing debate surrounding the use of wigs, weaves and hair products in a bid to achieve the promise of ‘westernised beauty’.
|Writer: Somalia Seaton|
Told through the eyes of seven women, Crowning Glory features a series of interwoven monologues to convey the Black British female experience. With interviews from members of the public interspersed throughout the piece, the show explores and reflects upon contemporary issues that, whilst discussed extensively online and through social media, often go unheard in the mainstream press."
I'm excited about this play for a number of reasons. Firstly, I love seeing and studying the voice and experience of Black British women expressed through art. Secondly, it's going to include interviews from everyday people; and finally, because I get the impression that it's going to be very straight talking with some killer comedy included.
The show will run from
Thursday 17th October – Saturday 9th November.
